Single Red LightOk heart attack moment last night, my Xbox 360 decided to display a single red light and an error message of E74! I have already had one Xbox 360 display the three red lights of death and this is the replacement. Now would you say this is sods law, I have actually had my PS3 on over the last couple of weeks and more so than the Xbox 360. I come back to the 360 and low and behold it starts to play up, my guess this is either one jealous console who is warning me that it needs to be played or it is aware that November is a good month for games.

November we have Call of Duty 4 (out in 2 days), then we have Assassins Creed (out in about a week and a bit), and then we have the game which I have had on pre-order for over a year now which is Mass Effect. Sods law would tell me that my console is bound to pack up on the month Mass Effect is out!!! So far it seems to be working… but I am watching this closely!

Incidentally the E74 error message can be displayed for one of the following reasons:

  • There is a 90% chance it’s a scaler chip problem (the “ANA” or “HANA” chip near the AV cable connection) #
  • Can be caused by a faulty AV cable.
  • In rare cases it is a problem with the GPU

My Elite had the Error 74 Code displayed on screen, along with one lit quandrant. It’s only two months old. Contacted Microsoft Customer Support last night (27/12/2007 they organised it to be collected by UPS this afternoon (28/12/2007). It wouldn’t play anything and wouldn’t connect to Xbox Live via it’s Ethernet Port. When told to unplug everything by Customer Support, it had all the red lights on, when restarted. You’d thing with the amount of moneys it costs, it would be fit for purpose under the Sales of Goods Act.

  2. I had the 3 red lights of death on first console which was I think 3 months old. However I could not grumble at Microsoft as they like yourself promised the console would be picked up the following day and it was.

I also then received my new console within a week from a support perspective I was very impressed.

I had 3 lights which changed to 1 light. the Ana chip overheats, and is randomly causing corruption. I fixed mine (as MS wont do it for free the cheeky idiots it’s still their fault) but it only lasts a day or two (use a hair dryer on the mobo in that area)

obviously if you don’t want to void your warranty then don’t open it, as 1 light error wasn’t covered by MS (which is complete BS it’s just as much a common/guilty fault as the 3 lights) I had no choice but to open it up myself because I was damned sure not giving MS any more money to fix their own problem.

please sign this ‘hardware recall’ petition for 360 - over 6000 signatures so far, nothing will happen but at least it’s a record of one of the greatest consumer fuck-overs in electronics history.
