PS3 ButtonI got home from work last night in a pretty good mood and remembered seeing that a demo for Uncharted: Drakes Fortune was going to be available on the PlayStation Network for download. I fired up my PS3 and downloaded the 2.0 firmware patch which is 2.o, everything is looking good and my mood is still positive.

I go into the PS3 Store and could not find the Uncharted Demo anywhere, not to worry I thought I will log out and log back in with my US Account, as I have downloaded many a thing from the US PlayStation Store all with success.

PS3 Network at this point is running very slowly…..

Ok finally got into the US Store and finally managed to get the demo downloaded to my PS3. After I install the downloaded demo, I go to run it…. “Please insert the game disk” is the message I get and nothing else.

What does this mean, well here is the real rant…

It means that European PS3 owners are shafted as we don’t get a great new demo to play, I mean lets face it when a demo is released we get excited and there is nothing else for the PS3 worthy of looking at.

It also means that the PS3 Network is a bag of shite and can’t handle the release of a fricking demo! Because the PS3 network was down for a number of hours, and when it was up it took over 10 mins to load a page.

Uncharted is coming out in Europe also so why don’t we get this demo?

Actually if you compare the US and European PlayStation Stores their is probably 5 times more content and games on the US site.

How do Sony think they are ever going to compare with Xbox Live? All you PS3 fan-boys will be shouting right now ”Well the PS3 network is free, blah blah blah”, I would rather pay my money to be honest for an online network that does not grind to a halt when a fricking demo comes out, and before again all you PS3 fan-boys say well loads of people are downloading it!!

Do you not think that the Xbox 360 with double the install base of the PS3 has demos that everyone will want to download? So more 360 owners online that PS3 owners, Xbox Live can handle the load, where as the first good demo to download on the PS3 network brings it down.

For a company the size of Sony it is shoddy and amateurish.

Lets not forget also that I am pissed that I can’t play this demo. I want to point out that I have not purchased a game for my PS3 since Launch in the UK????? Says a lot for the quality of games out for the PS3, I have a choice you see and I buy my games for the 360 as 10 times out of 10 they are better of the 360 anyways.

So back to Uncharted, well for the first time since the Launch I have seen something I am very interested in, a game on the PS3 that looks like it was meant to be on the PS3.

Also what is it with downloading a PS3 demo, and then having to fricking install it??? Xbox 360, download demo, play it! Sony you need to learn and it pains me to say learn from Microsoft on how to do online properly.

Now the demo did not work, and I am left with a “Why do a bother” feeling.

COD4 (Xbox 360), Assassins Creed (Xbox 360) and Mass Effect (Xbox 360) these are the games for me now this month. Sod the PS3, and screw Sony for once again shafting us European PS3 owners.

A bit of a rant sorry, but it really pissed me off that something this big (the PS3) has such a lame online network and lame support for the people who stupidly bought one!

NOTE:

Sony have annouced that a European version of the demo will be available on November 22nd 2007. SO only 2 weeks away!! Tut. Shocking.

To be fair, Xbox live does slow to a halt on occasions when a massive demo is released, such as BioShock for example - so it does happen to XBL too.

Although, I agree on all other points and I don’t know why anyone would buy, let alone own, a Playstation 3.

Additionally - the worrying trend is that Europe and the UK are just shunned totally by everyone. Guitar Hero 3 has been out in the US since October 28 and isn’t out here since Nov 23rd - For those of us lucky enough to get an import copy (Thankfully it’s region-free and if I believed in god, i’d have thanked him, but since he’s a fictional character I didn’t) it wasn’t such a big problem - but for those who haven’t it’s a long wait.

But wait! Rock Band is even worse - it’s out in 10 days in the US - Europe? How long is a piece of string? January/February? Maybe not at all if they can’t be arsed to transport all the hardware over here - We’re all too busy making roast beef and smoking pipes to worry about games after all.

Europe and more importantly the UK (bias) need to stop getting shafted on price, release dates and availability

  2. Yes XBox Live does slow down on occasions, however my point was that the XBox 360 has twice the install base as the PS3. I have never known XBox Live to actually stop working due to a demo being released.

Also if Sony want to compete then they need to up their game! I think the PS3 is a good console and has a lot of potential, the trouble is we have been saying that for over 12 months now, where are the games that will finally show this console off?

I can understand your frustration. Like yourself I own both consoles and I remember how pi$%ed off I felt when I got the ring of death on my XBox.
The PS3 is a fantasic console that is being let down by Sony big time. I think initially they were just being arrogant and thinking that no matter how they behaved, the PS3 would easily take over the market (based on the user loyalty built upon PS and PS2). This never happened and they’ve had to grudgingly lower the price. But they still need to kick it up a notch if they want to compete (forget about overtaking for the time being) against the XBox and it’s installed user base. They need more games and improve their online features.
I’m really fond of my PS3 and if it wasn’t for blu-ray movies and the odd downloaded trailer I don’t think it’d be getting turned on that often.
As for screwing UK market, well they’re all guilty of that. (C*nts!)

Johnny Pants ;-) is right about GT3 and Rock Band. I’ve pre-ordered the UK GT3 while some of my friends are already playing the US import. And I cannot wait for Rock Band and it’s a kick in the teeth knowing that the yanks will have it in a matter of days while we have to wait till what? Easter or something? Disgusting!!

  4. LOL

While the PS3 has had pretty poor software support over the last 12 months it is starting to pick up. Of the three games that you mention in your biased rant only Mass Effect is a 360 exclusive. The other two are as good on the PS3 so it seems a bit odd to “screw Sony” over a multi platform game.

As for the Uncharted demo, it was released region locked by accident. Naughty Dog weren’t aware (so they say) of this and fixed it on Friday night. They then posted an apology on the Sony blog saying they had fixed it. i downloaded the demo today and it worked fine. The error you got was nothing to do with networks being down but I guess guys like you who post up crap won’t correct your mistakes or do any research into why things don’t work. Just make a guess and then write some text to justify the assumptions. Baring in mind that the demo is out on the 22nd in Europe and that your not supposed to connect to the US store from anywhere but the US I think it was pretty good of them to fix the problem and then tell everyone what went wrong.

Now onto the grinding to a halt nonsense. The reason I stumbled on this excuse for a games blog was that the Xbox Live network is down. Broke. Not working. Second time in the last 3-4 weeks. Pretty poor for any service never mind one that costs money. I logged onto t’internet to find out more and picked up on this blog. If you download one of the popular 360 demo’s on day of release then it takes forever to download. Hours and hours. For Pro Evo I eventually cancelled and downloaded it quickly the next day. So it seems both services suffer the same flaws - big demo’s on initial release are slow and put a strain on the service, although I don’t think Microsoft released a demo tonight!

As for the PS3 network being lame…it’s not. It offers console gamers one important feature that we’ve yet to see on the paid for Xbox Live service - server support. Finally I can play in a console game with more than 16 players. It’s frustrating that in 5 years Microsoft only see fit to offer peer to peer game hosting as a viable solution. I would gladly pay some more money per month if it meant I could get 32 player gaming but it seems the PS3 is the only console that this is available for at the moment. For free.

This is pretty impressive considering Xbox Live is five years old…the PS network is one. The installed user base should be bigger on Live as it’s been around longer but both the 360 and PS3 sales are almost aligned (http://www.techvat.com/orange-box-takes-the-lead.html) despite the lack of software on the PS3.

I see you’ve mentioned the 40% PS3 failure rate elsewhere. Are you going to publish an update saying that statement was bollocks? The 360 reliability has been shocking. I’ve never seen a home consumer product fail so spectacularly on such a grand scale. On my small gaming forum we’re down to two members out of 50 who’s original 360 is still going strong. Two guys are on to their 4th 360. Terrible. I’m on my 2nd 360 and I have a gut feel it won’t last due to the poor design and inherent faults that are still designed into new 360’s today. It still impresses me that the PS3 is so quiet compared to the jet engines of the 360. Around 10 guys on my forums own a PS3. None have yet failed.

So there you go. Some facts to go along with your piss. I prefer the 360 over the PS3 purely down to the variety of games available. If it was down to hardware I would choose the PS3 every time as it’s quieter, plays Blu-Ray and has better media playback. What I really can’t stand about sites like yours though is fanboyish thoughts passing as fact. Do a bit of thinking before you rattle off your next shitty post. It’s also worthwhile picking up Warhawk and Ractchet on the PS3 as you really are missing out on two great, exclusive games.

  5. LOL thanks for your comment. Firstly my Rant and yes it was a Rant, was not biased in anyway shape or form. I want to love my PS3 I really do, if I was an Xbox fanboy I would have not parted with my £500 to buy a PS3. On paper the PS3 is bigger and better beast than the 360 and I think this is what I was hoping and alas so far nothing has proven to me that the machine does anything more than my 360.

PS3 Network and Xbox Live grinding to a halt, well sorry to say when I was online that night for me anyways it was down. I am referring to anything Sony, so that would be the Stores, the websites, the mail system etc. As for the gaming side I don’t know as I did not try it.

Xbox Live network being down? Well I am obviously very lucky as I have never had any issues with it and I have owned a 360 since launch. Maybe I am lucky with my timing, afterall you have said the network is down tonight and tonight I have been on the PS3 playing the Uncharted Demo which is bloody good by the way.

Why bring up console exclusives, I was not ranting on whether those games where exclusives or not, my point in buying them on the Xbox was I was pissed with the PS3.

You are right to point out that I did post about the reported 40% failure rate in the 40GB PS3, you will also notice that I posted Sony’s responce to it!

I have to disagree however with your thoughts on the PS3 Network. I think it is really dissapointing it has room for improvement. I also don’t think it is as good as Xbox Live and I never said that was perfect either. By offering that one thing you mentioned over the Xbox Live network does not in my eyes make it better. It does have it’s merits and your rightly pointed out the Server support which I applaud Sony for.

Also throwing stats of how the PS3 and Xbox 360 are selling is pointless as there are so many sources, some of which quote numbers of units shipped however this does not mean that 50,000 360’s or PS3’s are still sitting on shelves in shops.

I saw some figures the other day that showed US sales of the Wii where around 3.6m since Jan 2007, 360 was 2.2m and the PS3 was 1.2m so which numbers do you believe the ones you pointed out or the once being quoted on IGN for example. There are so many sites shouting numbers around, most of the press releases I have read which are on http://www.gamespress.co.uk actually state the Xbox 360 is out selling the PS3 2 to 1 in Europe and the US.

Also I am on my 2nd 360 too, the are shite for breaking down and I have never defended them at all. You are dead right the Xbox 360 is worse than my first car which screwed up every week on me. My current 360 also gave me a Single red light last week which was nice!

Yes, yes yes the PS3 is so quiet compared the Xbox 360, I have apparently been told the Elite is better for that but not heard it myself.

You mention Warhark I have it and I am not that impressed with it I think Halo 3 offers a better online experience or something like GRAW 2 or Vegas.

Ratchet and Clank I have the demo, throught the graphics looked good and presentation of the game looks good but alas platforms are not my bag.

So I think my rant was justified and if you had not been so Pubescent about jumping down my throat and calling me a fanboy you would have seen that the reason I am pissed is I actually want my PS3 to be good. I know it will be good, when you have this lovely black beast sitting there on the TV stand you want it to be good now and not good in 6 months time.

I have owned my PS3 since release, and I am bored of waiting for the promises and hype Sony made to come true.

Finally I am right to have a rant about the US store being better than the UK store. Have you not noticed that the US store has so much more content to offer. Yes to be annoyed at a US demo on a US store is perhaps wrong, but I think the greatest injustice is the amount of stuff we do not get at all. Open you eyes and you can see that Europe gets stiffed.

We pay £100 more than the US for our console? For example a PS3 60GB console would cost you $425 on Amazon.com in the US at today’s exchange rate that would be £203.25p. Same console (actually with less backward support) on Amazon.co.uk £350. So I make that nearly £150 more in the UK.

The PS3 40GB version is $399 which is about £190, our 40GB version is £299.99 again a £100 more expensive, the US version also come with Spider-man 3 on Blue-ray. So again my rant was justified as we get less and pay more.

PS. I nearly got COD4 on the PS3 however all my friends have Xbox 360’s and thus wanted to play online.

  6. Also just to add to my comment above, I have ordered Assassins Creed on the PS3 and not the 360. I understand that the PS3 version maybe slightly better than the XBox 360 version.
